Roof repair
Unthank Road, Norwich
I was contact by Tim and Jill in summer 2024. They were looking for a multitrader to help them carry out some roof repairs and other work to the 1950s house they had inherited from Tim's mother some years earlier. With an engineering and architectural design background, Tim is the sort of person who can turn his hand to anything - which is how he came to build their extension more or less single-handed! He knew what needed doing and wanted to do the work himself, rather than paying a roofing contractor, but needed some assistance. Enter me.
We stripped the lower third of the roof and replaced the rotten sarking felt, about three-quarters of the timber tilt fillets, battens, soffits and facias, added facia vents, then put it all back together and painted. I also redecorated the original crittal windows and stripped and painted the cast iron downpipes, did some interior skirting, door linings and architraves, removed a fireplace and helped line the chimney ready for a log burner.Â
Tim and Jill made me feel like part of the family, inviting me to have lunch with them most days and providing plentiful tea and interesting conversation. It was great to work alongside an experienced and fearless homeowner. I learned a lot on this project and wish them well in their dry and warm home!
